We are working on a more complete guide to visiting the Faroe Islands, but until then, we wanted to share our suggestions for what to pack for a successful trip. Even though we visited at the end of Summer, this guide can really be applied all year round due to the Faroe’s fairly mild seasonal differences (Winter averages a reasonable 3 degrees, while Summer hovers around 13) Just add more layers for a Winter trip!

  1. Gloves and a beanie - yep, even in Summer its worth having these in your bag. In Winter we’d guess a scarf would be worth packing too.

  2. A backpack - if you are planning any walks (and you should be!) a comfortable day pack will be essential.

  3. Warm layers - You can never quite predict what weather you will get on the Faroes and often one island is completely different from the next, so layering is the name of the game!

  4. Comfortable, waterproof walking boots - make sure these are worn in before you head off on any hikes and pack some good quality socks to go with them.

  5. Sunglasses - it never hurts to be optimistic!

  6. Refillable water bottle - Tap water on the Faroe Islands is some of the best in the world so make use of a refillable bottle before you set out for the day

  7. Windproof and Waterproof Jacket - Just assume it will rain most days of your trip, and a good jacket will make all the difference when you are standing at the edge of a cliff being battered by rain and wind. Ours were Kathmandu and North Face and both stood up to the challenge.

  8. Camera - because this is one photogenic place! You could also bring along lens wipes, extra batteries and a tri-pod

  9. Thermals - you never quite know what to expect when you set out at the beginning of the day so it's worth layering up with a good base.

  10. Snacks - even in the larger towns there was rarely a cafe or restaurant to stop for lunch and to be honest it’s so nice to stop and have a picnic outdoors anyway! So pre-pack your lunch before you set off. As a plan B the service stations have some pretty decent food if you get stuck.

On a side note, you might also want to bring some waterproof pants if you plan on going on a lot of long hikes, and a first aid kit is always useful. We also had an extra bag tucked away in the car with spare socks and clothes incase we got caught in the rain, or needed to add an extra layer in the wind.

So there you have it! The top 10 things you should have in your carry on for a trip to the stunning Faroe Islands.

PS - We’d love to hear you’re suggestions for any thing we may have forgotten to add!
